Painting (continued)
The abstract work in the "From the Road" series began in an Airplane in 1972. I was living in New York trying to be an artist but fortunately had a day job. The day job was as a purser (now called flight attendant) for Eastern Airlines. In my suitcase, I kept a bag of makers and glue. Post cards were a ready surface. All flight attendants had some crew room distraction for the waiting time. Most read. With markers, I drew pictures on postcards of the female flight attendants and their uniform combinations of sky blue suits, slacks and hot pants. In hotel rooms the post cards became collages using, pieces of textured paper collected along the way. The subject was abstractions of the day. My cards traveled easily in a seat back puke bag.

When I joined the circus I lived in a trailer that usually moved everyday. With a larger work space the collages enlarged from 3 x 5 to 9x11. After a day of precise lettering, elaborate scrolling and pictorial banner painting, I welcomed the freedom of the abstract collages on the table in my trailer. After 25 years I parked my trailer at the beach where the collages continue in my exploration of a quiet minimalism.
